Nature As Narrative

Traditional folk lyrical subject matter (old murder ballads/nature personified & folk stories) takes on a more reflective and less ’bright’ feel in the indie folk genre, more muted , often giving a feeling of travelling and a sense of place, rustic/countryside or the coast and captures the feeling of nature with a more low key delivery. Subtle and introspective. Often using colours/temporal lyrics (dawn/dusk) and geographical ( sense of place) with a gentle symbolism and abstraction to convey feeling/emotion.

Artists such as the The Roo Paynes and Hollow Coves have taken this to great success with streams in the 100's of Millions.

Here is a list to Paul's Indie Folk Spotify Playlist

Same Title Different Song

The title is going to be the line that everyone remembers. More important, it’s going to define the message of the song. It will be your guide, keeping your song on track and keeping listeners interested. Think of your title as the peak of a pyramid. The rest of the song is made up of the building blocks that support it.

Placement of the title is also very important

Opening line – Primacy effect

 Alisha's Attic - I Am I Feel

Brooke Benton - Rainy Night In George

Last Line – Recency effect

Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in The dark

Taylor Swift - Champagne Problems

Title on repeat

Harry Styles- Watermelon Sugar

U2 – I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

We will all source interesting titles and Shelly & Paul will pick one that everyone will use somewhere in the song to the best effect!

This produces a great variety of songs in both style/delivery and narrative.
